Women are caregivers by nature, and yet we rarely include ourselves on our kindness to-do list. But the truth is, putting ourselves second serves no one. It can lead to poor health, low productivity, and burnout. Self-care is essential for our overall well-being. In fact, not looking after ourselves can actually be irresponsible! Our health impacts how we feel and how we connect with others, as well as the world around us. Here are the reasons you should kick off a self-care practice today, and simple strategies to get you started.
Your life may depend on it.
Inflammation is at the root of many chronic diseases. Thankfully, you can quell that inner fire. One of the best tactics: eating more veggies and drinking fresh green juices and smoothies. Plants are filled with health-hiking vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes that will decrease inflammation and increase your energy and immunity.
It enhances your beauty.
A self-care practice has the power to amp your glowiness as well as any product could. Are you sleeping at least seven hours a night? Staying hydrated? Do you take mini time-outs to reduce your stress and manage your cortisol levels by, say, meditating or getting a massage? Start there. Most important, are you enjoying your life? Joy is the gateway to radiance.
Your relationships will get stronger.
You are one half of every relationship you’re in, and if you feel spent, cranky, and uncomfortable in your skin, it’s hard to be present and available for others. Have you ever said (or thought), “Don’t touch me, I’m too fat,” or snapped at your partner because you’re depleted and stressed out? How can we possibly deepen our relationships when we’re so down on number one?
It heals old wounds.
We all carry around emotional baggage from past hurts, but we have the opportunity to heal the pain by offering tender acts of loving kindness and compassion to ourselves. Doing so helps build one of the greatest friendships of your life: the one you have with yourself. In other words, you can become your own BFF! No matter who comes and who goes in your life, commit to always having your own back. Talk about a trust-building exercise!
